High-performance audio devices demand extreme precision. For engineers designing world-class headphones, earbuds, and in-ear acoustic systems, millimeter-level variations in ear canal geometry can significantly impact:
Acoustic response
Electromagnetic and impedance antenna characteristics
Surface wave propagation
A large company, a global leader in premium audio products, approached Neva Electromagnetics with a specific challenge:
Existing computational human body models did not have sufficient anatomical resolution in the ear canal to support next-generation device simulations. A custom, anatomical model with a 0.3 mm resolution in the ear canal was requested.

Returning to the Source Data
To meet the customer’s requirements, Neva EM did not simply refine mesh density.
We went back to the original imaging datasets and performed new segmentation of the ear canal and surrounding structures.
This included:
Re-segmenting soft tissue boundaries
Isolating cartilage structures
Refining air-tissue interfaces
Increasing geometric resolution in narrow passages
Preserving anatomical accuracy while improving computational usability
Custom Modeling as a Strategic Capability
What differentiates Neva EM is not just simulation expertise — but the ability to modify and reconstruct anatomical models when customer applications demand it.
Our capabilities include:
Re-segmentation from raw imaging data
Tissue-specific refinement
Region-specific high-resolution re-segmentation and modeling
Custom dielectric property assignment
Simulation-ready mesh optimization
New model creation using customer supplied or Neva EM acquired image data sets (MRI, CT)
We enable our customers to design with confidence in applications for which more customized models are a necessity.

Results
Using Neva EM's custom anatomical reconstruction, the customer was able to design superior earbuds as well as increase confidence in RF and SAR compliance evaluations.
By upgrading the anatomical foundation, we enabled more reliable product optimization upstream in the design cycle — saving the customer significant resources.
Beyond Audio: Applications Across Medical and Wearable Markets
This capability extends well beyond consumer electronics. High-resolution anatomical modeling is critical for:
Hearing aids and cochlear devices
Implantable neurostimulation systems
In-ear biometric sensors
Bone-conduction devices
Head-mounted wearable systems
When anatomical precision drives performance, custom modeling becomes a competitive advantage.
